FAMU Man Rising

Mission

FAMU Man Rising, will be a signature program built on continuous exposure for male students to various forms of culture and history, enhancing their public speaking and image skills, family planning workshops, mentorship training and introducing economic development through entrepreneurship. Ideally, FAMU male leaders (administrators, faculty and staff), local Tallahassee leaders and FAMU alumni will serve as stakeholders in the holistic edification of FAMU men by contributing to the dialogue, assisting with exposure and any costs that may be associated with the program. The program will mimic some of the methods used at Morehouse College and Howard University to support black men. The program will also assist with FAMU’s efforts to increase retention rates among African-American men. A pilot program will begin in January 2010 targeted at first-year male students as well as those interested in serving as mentors for the Black Man Rising mentoring program.

Goals for FAMU Man Rising:

  • Ensure that there is a significant increase in graduation rates at Florida A&M University among African-American men
  • Assist FAMU men with preparing for graduate school and counseling them on career preparation
  • Remind FAMU men of their social responsibility to uplift their community
